Lynn was born on August 10, 1933, in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, to parents Louis Kay, a salesman and Bertha Cornsweet Kay, who worked in retail. She grew up in a Jewish family. Cohen studied acting at Michael Howard Studios in New York City.
The late actress also spent a year at the University of Wisconsin and another one year at Northwestern University before moving to St. Louis in order to start acting in regional theater. While working in the theatre, she taught at a summer theater program.
