Her father works as a GP and her mother is a nurse and counselor. She was raised alongside five siblings: two brothers, Connor Donnelly and Aidan Donnelly, and three sisters, Susan Donnelly, Helen Donnelly, Kirsten Donnelly.

She completed her schooling at the Rathmore Grammar School. Later on, she joined the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and graduated from there in 2004.
