Dunning was married to her longtime boyfriend Steve Timmons for over two decades. Timmons is a former volleyball player who represented the US for three consecutive Summer Olympics starting in 1984.

He also co-founded and served as a president of an action sports clothing and lifestyle brand called Redsand. Debbe and Steve tied the knot on May 11, 1997, just a year before Home Improvement ended after completing its eight seasons. 

They welcomed their first child, daughter Spencer Schae Timmons on December 2, 1996. They also have two sons; Stony Timmons, born in 2000, and Sysco Timmons, born in 2008. 

Steve was previously married to basketball executive Jeanie Buss who is the daughter of Jerry Buss. Dunning and Timmons ended their 20-year long marriage in 2018.
