Mortensen was diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer, he revealed via an ESPN statement on January 15, 2016.

“I am probably in better shape than I have been in a long time...Maybe they have plans someday to retire me, but I’m telling you I have no plans to retire," he told LA Times in 2019.

In 2015, the 69-year-old erroneously reported on the Deflategate controversy. Following this, his plans to appear on WEEI's Dennis and Callahan radio show on July 31, 2015, was canceled.

As per WEEI, Mortensen remarked that he would "not allow WEEI, Kraft, or anybody to make me the centerpiece of a story that has been misreported far beyond anything I did in the first 48 hours."
